| Somewhere in the Midwest, a transistor radio plays; Aretha and Otis testify to Don and Phil; Orbison soars, Mr. Charles wails and Dylan rolls on down Highway 61. Out in the garage, soft curses at a temperamental old Fairlane, mix with Cash, Williams, and that high, lonesome Stanley cry. It's the big beat, the lover's lament and the tears of a clown.
Billy Zenn grew up there, and the music stayed with him. Through a haze of beer lights and smoke, bands and bars, miles and years, the music has remained; wild, free and inviolate. Growling, moaning, hissing and howling---call it the blues, call it country, call it R & B or plain old rock & roll; it comes down to the same thing: American Music.
That's Billy Zenn. With a voice as strong as his experience is deep, and songs that resonate across time and place, Billy Zenn is a performer who means what he says, and delivers it---every time. Steadfastly clinging to his roots in the rich, dark soul of America, Billy kicks the tried and true into the 21st century and brings it all back home, fresh and new.
When Billy decided to form a band, he did it the way he does everything; he went right for the throat and assembled a collection of the finest musicians to be found anywhere. Of course, it didn't hurt that all of them were already his good friends. Together, they deliver immaculate musicianship, years of experience, an obvious sense of joy in the music, and a consistently high-energy show.
Rob Brumfiel is one of those rare guitarists who, quite simply, can take your breath away. His fluid, edgy style is coupled with impeccable technique, and his credits run the gamut from player to engineer-producer to a twenty year stint as instructor at The Recording Workshop, where he trained a host of engineers who have gone on to make an impact on the national scene.
Doug Edwards is a bass player extraordinaire; deceptively subtle, he can nail a groove like nobody's business while simultaneously providing the kind of rhythmic color that can set the tone for any tune. A veteran of bands whose styles have ranged from pop to heavy metal, Doug is also a crackerjack recording engineer whose work includes both a wide array of music and national commercials.
Jeff Kendall is the band's "utility guy". Whether he's burning a guitar lead, trading off with Rob, locking in a sublime rhythm part, singing backup, or doubling on keys and harp, Jeff is, frankly, indispensable to the Ringers sound. He easily handles any style, from funk to rock or R & B to blues, and often can be found sitting in or recording with many well-known, Central Ohio acts.
Joel Steward is, in to put it simply, a dream drummer. 'Need a new and different groove? Joel's got it. 'Want to nail down a classic idea? Give it to Joel. His tasteful, punchy, clock work playing is matched only by his flawless sense of dynamics, and his experience ranges from rock, pop and jazz to big bands and touring Broadway shows.
With the release of their latest CD, "Zenn & Tonic", Billy Zenn & The Ringers have officially hit the ground runnin'.
